Da Vinci Prostatectomy and other robotic surgeries

Robotic SurgeriesDa Vinci prostatectomy and other robotic surgeries are performed by Dr Bianco. For the kidneys Dr Bianco uses the da Vinci surgical system to remove renal cell carcinoma, that kidney surgery is called a nephrectomy. A nephrectomy is the total removal of the kidney.  When the kidney tumor or kidney mass is small enough then Dr. Bianco will perform a partial nephrectomy which gives his patients the opportunity to save the kidney. The significance of removing just the small tumor, and not the whole kidney, is that both kidneys will be functioning, and then in case one of the kidneys fails in the future, there is one kidney left to maintain the urinary system. If the kidney needs to be removed and the other kidney fails or becomes cancerous either dialysis or a kidney transplant would be the medical alternatives. The da Vinci surgical system is also used by Dr. Bianco for another kidney procedure called a pyeloplasty. If urine is blocked from leaving the body, the renal pelvis of the kidney may have too much pressure put on it which may cause the kidney’s renal pelvis to become deformed and even detach itself from the ureter. When this happens Dr Bianco fixes the cause of the urinary obstruction and surgically repairs the deformed renal pelvis and reattaches it to the ureter.

Da Vinci prostatectomy and other robotic surgeries are consistently performed by Dr Bianco, which is why Columbia University Division of Urology has made him the head of their robotic program at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Bianco also performs bladder surgery with the da Vinci surgical system for bladder cancer that has grown into the bladder wall. This bladder surgery that removes the bladder is called a cystectomy. Most often a bladder surgery is simply the removal of a bladder tumor that is growing on the surface of the bladder which is called a transurethral resection of a bladder tumor (TURBT) surgery. The TURBT is the most common bladder surgery however when the cancer invades the deeper layers of the bladder, the bladder needs to be removed.  If the bladder cancer is only in one area of the bladder then Dr Bianco may be able to perform a partial cystectomy. For a partial cystectomy the section of the bladder with the cancer is cut out and then Dr Bianco attaches the two cut sides together, sealing up the bladder so that urinary function is maintained.
